Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup shortening
  • 2.0 eggs, beaten
  • 1.0 cup boiling water
  • 1.0 cup evaporated milk
  • 2.0 tsp lemon flavoring
  • 3.0 pkgs yeast
  • 0.5 cup warm water
  • 8.5 cups flour
  • 0.5 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.5 cup sugar
  • 2.0 tsp salt

Directions

  • 1. Combine shortening and boiling water.
  • 2. Stir in milk and lemon flavoring.
  • 3. Dissolve yeast in warm water.
  • 4. Add yeast mixture to shortening mixture when lukewarm.
  • 5. Mix in remaining ingredients, knead 5 minutes.
  • 6. Let rest 10 minutes.
  • 7. Roll out 1/4” thick, cut into 1x6” strips.
  • 8. Let rise 1 hour.
  • 9. Fry at 375°F until light brown.
