Conchas (Mexican Sweet Bread)

Ingredients

  • 2.5 tsp yeast
  • 0.5 cup warm water
  • 0.5 cup evaporated milk
  • 0.375 cup white sugar
  • 1.0 tsp salt
  • 0.333 cup butter or margarine, melted
  • 1.0 egg
  • 4.0 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.666 cup white sugar (topping)
  • 0.5 cup butter or margarine (topping)
  • 1.0 cup all-purpose flour (topping)
  • 2.0 tsp ground cinnamon (topping)
  • 1.0 tsp vanilla extract (topping)

Directions

  • 1. Mix yeast and warm water.
  • 2. Add milk, 3/8 cup sugar, 1/3 cup butter, salt, egg, and 2 cups flour.
  • 3. Gradually add remaining flour and 1/2 tsp cinnamon.
  • 4. Knead 6-8 minutes.
  • 5. Let rise in a greased bowl until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • 6. Beat 2/3 cup sugar and 1/2 cup butter for topping.
  • 7. Stir in 1 cup flour, divide, and mix cinnamon into one half and vanilla into the other.
  • 8. Cut dough into 12 pieces, shape into balls.
  • 9. Place on a greased cookie sheet.
  • 10. Flatten topping into circles and place on dough.
  • 11. Cut grooves in topping.
  • 12. Let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes.
  • 13. Bake at 375°F for 20 minutes.
