My Favorite Dressing/Stuffing

Savory bread stuffing with gravy

Ingredients

  • 16.0 cups toasted bread, torn
  • 1.0 cup chopped celery
  • 1.5 cups chopped chicken (optional)
  • 2.5 cups chicken broth
  • 1.0 cup butter
  • 1.0 cup chopped onion
  • 1.0 tsp salt
  • 1.0 tsp pepper
  • 1.5 tsp poultry seasoning
  • 2.0 tsp ground sage
  • 0.75 can chicken broth (for basting)
  • 1.5 tsp corn starch (for basting)

Directions

  • 1. Sauté onion and celery in butter.
  • 2. Mix with bread, chicken, broth, salt, pepper, poultry seasoning, and sage until dry yet moist.
  • 3. Transfer to a 6-quart slow cooker and cook at medium setting (2½ notch) for 3 hours, stirring once halfway.
  • 4. For basting, thicken ¾ can chicken broth with corn starch to gravy consistency.
  • 5. Baste dressing occasionally with gravy, adding more broth if dry.
